Ethical issues of KM

The Minitrack is concerned with an examination of this darker side of knowledge management.  Papers are solicited which look at the ethical issues of raised by the practices of knowledge management, applications of KM in fields such as information warfare, and papers which  provide a broader, more historically informed, definition of knowledge and knowledge management than those coming from much of the KM literature.

Knowledge Flows: Knowledge Transfer, Sharing and Exchange in Organizations

Knowledge flows occur between individuals, among groups of individuals, and between organizations. This minitrack focuses on examining the nature and role of knowledge flows (e.g., knowledge transfer and knowledge sharing) among entities.

Knowledge Management / Organizational Memory Implementation and other Issues

During the past twelve years, HICSS has evolved into a key international forum for knowledge management, organizational learning and organizational memory researchers and practitioners. This minitrack continues this trend by encouraging paper submissions from researchers and practitioners exploring implementation aspects of KM/OM systems.  These include case studies, measuring the effectiveness and/or success of implemented systems, critical issues, strategy concerns, and lessons learned.

Knowledge Mobilization and Enterprise Coordination Capability

In his keynote address at HICSS 38, Peter G.W. Keen challenged researchers to move beyond historical interpretations of knowledge management to address ‘knowledge mobilization.’   The purpose of this minitrack is to assess this vision, investigate its tenets, evaluate relevant technical approaches to architecture, infrastructure, meta-modeling and mobile computing, and to postulate theoretical bases for addressing the knowledge paradox and the concomitant need for enterprise coordination capability.

Knowledge Networks and Distributed Knowledge Systems

Organizations are faced with developing communication strategies that maintain centralized and fully accessible knowledge bases while at the same time trying to compete in a highly decentralized market place. Numerous networked devices serve the purpose of connecting human knowledge capital. This minitrack will identify and examine mechanisms for knowledge workers to access knowledge capital inherent in knowledge networks by examining the practices of knowledge workers and the networks in which they work.

Philosophical Foundations of KM research

This minitrack is founded on the belief that we have hardly begun to tap the potential of philosophy and epistemology in our work, especially in developing a more robust foundation for what we do. The objective is to explore how philosophy has been used as a reference discipline to knowledge management research, and to foster the development of a "philosophy of knowledge management technology.  Understanding and managing the ethical implications of KM-related technology seems to be a vital issue, and accordingly, it seems appropriate that we turn to philosophy as away of understanding these issues in the context of knowledge management systems.
